Hands-off volunteerism

People are comforting their moral and ethical consciences while being misguided by big corporations and personalities whose only goal is to increase engagement. They are naturally inclined to help, but this tendency often collides with inherent laziness, resulting in the illusion of effortless volunteerism.

Wildfires, terrorism, earthquakes, hurricanes, and nuclear accidents are common, often impacting residential areas, destroying homes, and causing injury or death.

Today, smartphones come equipped with advanced cameras and wireless technology. Their affordability and widespread availability have made them ubiquitous, accessible to people across all income levels.

Social media platforms promised to democratize society by amplifying every voice. Features like instant picture-sharing empowered users to shape the public discourse through consumption and creation. These advancements stem from a noble human drive to contribute, yet are often tempered by innate laziness and a fear of involvement.

However, while social media engagement can influence political and societal landscapes, it often fosters echo chambers that detract from issues that also deserve attention.

> _**One death**_ is a _**tragedy**_ , a million deaths a statistic (possibly Josef Stalin)

I think that the phenomenon boils down to:

  • false sense of involvement as a result of the number of people receiving your message
  • innate willingness to help
  • laziness
  • peer pressure

I ended there thinking about how:

  • talking or writing **rarely** has the same effect as acting unless you are a prominent figure who’s an established or popular thinker
  • your contributions are **a drop in an ocean** of contributions that do not align thus having minimal impact
  • people are most likely a **sinkhole** , not a **glacier**
  • the average Joe doesn’t have a large enough audience and even if they do, they rarely care

**Yet, the internet is a valuable activism tool that** :

  • depends on people that are willing to act
  • works best as a way to transfer and process information

So, if you have to be an activist use the Internet as a tool to build.
